Why Beihang matters
Beihang University (北京航空航天大学, Běijīng Hángkōng Hángtiān Dàxué, formerly Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics) is China's top-ranked university for aerospace engineering and aeronautics. Founded in 1952 as China's first institution dedicated to aeronautical education, Beihang has been at the center of every major milestone in China's aviation and space programs. Its researchers contributed to the Shenzhou manned spacecraft, the Chang'e lunar exploration missions, and the development of China's commercial aviation industry including the C919 passenger jet.
Beihang is a Project 985 and Project 211 university, consistently ranked among China's top 15-20 institutions. Beyond aerospace, it has strong programs in computer science, software engineering, materials science, and mechanical engineering. The university's location in Beijing's Haidian district places it in the heart of the city's academic and technology corridor, adjacent to Peking University and Tsinghua University.
For international students, Beihang offers a combination that is hard to find elsewhere: world-class aerospace engineering education, direct access to China's space and aviation research infrastructure, and a location in China's capital. Students interested in aeronautics, astronautics, or the intersection of engineering and national technology programs will find Beihang among the most compelling options in China.
English-taught programs
Beihang offers English-taught master's programs in Aeronautical and Astronautical Science and Technology, Computer Science and Technology, Software Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Electronic Engineering. These programs are well-established and attract students from across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. The aerospace engineering master's is the flagship program, providing access to laboratories and research facilities that few universities worldwide can match.
At the doctoral level, English-taught programs are available in several engineering disciplines. Research supervision is available in areas including flight dynamics, propulsion systems, spacecraft design, navigation and control, and satellite communications. PhD candidates benefit from Beihang's extensive connections to the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) and the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC).
For Chinese-taught programs, HSK 5 (score 180+) is required for undergraduates and HSK 5 (score 210+) for graduate programs. English-taught programs require IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 80+. Admission to the aerospace programs is competitive, and applicants with strong quantitative backgrounds in physics or engineering are preferred.
Campus and Beijing life
Beihang's campus is in the Xueyuan Road (学院路) area of Haidian district, a neighborhood dense with universities and research institutes. The campus is compact but well-equipped, with specialized facilities including wind tunnels, flight simulators, and satellite ground stations that are rare in university settings. The library has one of China's best collections of aerospace engineering literature.
International student dormitories offer single and double rooms at 800-1,500 RMB per month. The campus is well-connected by metro (Line 10 and Line 15 both have stations nearby), making it easy to reach central Beijing, the business district, and other university campuses. The surrounding area has numerous restaurants, cafes, and shops catering to the large student population.
Living costs are comparable to other Beijing universities. Budget 2,500-4,000 RMB per month for food, transportation, and personal expenses. The CSC scholarship is available, and Beihang's allocation is generous for engineering programs.
Admissions and costs
Tuition for Chinese-taught undergraduate programs is approximately 22,000 RMB per year. English-taught master's programs cost 35,000-50,000 RMB per year. Doctoral programs cost 35,000-45,000 RMB per year. These rates are standard for 985 engineering universities in Beijing.
Beihang values strong technical backgrounds. For engineering programs, a bachelor's or master's degree in a relevant STEM field with competitive grades is essential. Research experience, particularly in aerospace-related areas, significantly strengthens applications. The application period runs from November through April.
The combination of specialized facilities, industry connections, and Beijing location makes Beihang one of the best-value options for international students focused on aerospace. While it lacks the breadth of comprehensive universities, its depth in aeronautics and astronautics is unmatched in China.
