Step 01

Why Chongqing University matters

Chongqing University (重庆大学, Chóngqìng Dàxué, or CQU) is a Project 985 and Project 211 university and the leading engineering institution in western China's most populous city. Founded in 1929, CQU has particular strengths in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, and architecture. The university's location in Chongqing — a megacity of 32 million people that serves as the economic hub of China's southwest — gives it a strategic position in one of the country's fastest-growing regions.

CQU's strengths are in electrical engineering (particularly high-voltage transmission and power systems, critical to China's western electricity transmission strategy), mechanical engineering (with applications in Chongqing's automobile and motorcycle manufacturing industries), civil engineering (relevant to the massive infrastructure projects that define Chongqing's urban development), and architecture. The university also has developing programs in economics and management that benefit from Chongqing's commercial growth.

For international students, CQU offers engineering education in one of China's most visually dramatic and culturally distinctive cities. Chongqing is unlike anywhere else in China — a mountain metropolis built on steep hillsides at the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers, with a food culture famous for its extreme spiciness (Chongqing hotpot is legendary). The city's rapid development creates unique research opportunities in urban engineering, transportation systems, and infrastructure resilience.

Step 02

Programs for international students

CQU offers English-taught master's programs in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Architecture, Computer Science, and Business Administration. The electrical engineering program is the strongest — CQU's State Key Laboratory of Power Transmission Equipment and System Security provides access to research facilities that are nationally leading. The program is particularly relevant for students interested in power systems, renewable energy, and smart grid technology.

The architecture program at CQU is well-regarded and takes advantage of Chongqing's unique urban landscape — a vertical city where buildings are stacked on hillsides, roads spiral through mountains, and the relationship between architecture and topography is unusually intimate. Design studios focus on hillside and high-density urban architecture, providing skills that are transferable to many developing-world cities.

Chinese-taught programs require HSK 5 for undergraduate admission and HSK 5 (score 210+) for graduate programs. English-taught programs require IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 80+. The application period runs from November through April.

Step 03

Chongqing: China's mountain megacity

Chongqing (重庆) is a municipality of 32 million people — the largest city in western China and one of the largest urban areas in the world. The city is built on steep hills at the confluence of two major rivers, creating a dramatic landscape of skyscrapers climbing mountainsides, bridges spanning deep valleys, and a night skyline that is among China's most spectacular. The city's topography means it is one of the few Chinese cities where bicycles are essentially useless — everyone walks, takes the bus, or rides one of the cable cars that traverse the hills.

The food culture in Chongqing is intense and celebrated. Chongqing hotpot (重庆火锅) — a bubbling cauldron of chili oil, Sichuan peppercorns, and offal — is the city's signature dish and has spread throughout China. Street food is abundant, spicy, and cheap. Budget 1,500-2,500 RMB per month for food, transportation, and personal expenses. Dormitory accommodation costs 500-1,200 RMB per month.

Chongqing's climate is challenging — summers are extremely hot and humid (regularly exceeding 38°C), earning the city the nickname 'Furnace' (火炉). Winters are damp and overcast but not freezing. The city has an international airport, high-speed rail to Chengdu (1.5 hours), and growing international connections. The expatriate community is smaller than in Chengdu but growing as the city attracts more foreign investment.

Step 04

Admissions and costs

Tuition for Chinese-taught undergraduate programs is approximately 18,000-22,000 RMB per year. English-taught master's programs cost 28,000-40,000 RMB per year. Doctoral programs cost 28,000-38,000 RMB per year. These rates are moderate for a 985 university.

CQU values strong STEM backgrounds for engineering programs and design portfolios for architecture. The electrical engineering program prefers applicants with electrical engineering or physics backgrounds. The architecture program requires portfolio submission.

CQU is a strong choice for engineering students who want to experience one of China's most dynamic and distinctive cities. The combination of solid engineering programs, low living costs, and Chongqing's unique urban environment creates a study experience that is different from the more common Beijing-Shanghai trajectory. For students interested in power systems, urban engineering, or hillside architecture, CQU offers specialized expertise that few other universities can match.
