Step 01

Why CityU matters

City University of Hong Kong (香港城市大学, Xiānggǎng Chéngshì Dàxué, or CityU) is a public research university in Kowloon, Hong Kong. Founded in 1984 as the City Polytechnic of Hong Kong, it gained university status in 1994 and has since risen rapidly through international rankings. CityU is consistently ranked among Asia's top 20 universities and is particularly noted for its professional orientation — the university emphasizes practical, career-relevant education alongside academic research.

CityU's strengths are in business (the College of Business is AACSB-accredited and highly ranked), law (the School of Law is one of Hong Kong's leading law schools with particular strength in commercial law), creative media (the School of Creative Media offers unique programs combining technology with artistic practice), data science, and engineering. The university has also developed strong programs in energy and environment, veterinary medicine (it operates the only veterinary school in Hong Kong), and public policy.

For international students who want a Hong Kong university experience with a more practical, career-focused orientation than HKU or CUHK, CityU is an excellent choice. Its urban location, modern facilities, and strong connections to Hong Kong's professional industries create good outcomes for graduates seeking employment.

Step 02

Programs and academic structure

CityU offers undergraduate and graduate programs across nine colleges/schools: Business, Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Science, Engineering, Law, Creative Media, Data Science, Energy and Environment, and Veterinary Medicine. All instruction is in English. The undergraduate program typically takes four years; master's programs range from one to two years.

The School of Law offers LLB, JD, LLM, and JSD programs. The LLB provides full professional legal qualification for practice in Hong Kong. The LLM offers specializations in arbitration and dispute resolution, economic and financial law, and Chinese and comparative law. The law school benefits from CityU's location in Kowloon, close to many law firms and the District Court.

The School of Creative Media is unique among Hong Kong universities — it offers BFA, MFA, and PhD programs that combine digital media production, critical studies, and creative practice. Programs include animation, interactive media, film production, and computational arts. This school attracts students from around the world who want to work at the intersection of technology and creativity.

The Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences is the only veterinary school in Hong Kong and one of the few in Asia offering internationally accredited veterinary programs. The six-year Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (BVM) is recognized by major veterinary licensing bodies worldwide.

Step 03

Campus and Kowloon life

CityU's campus is in Kowloon Tong, a residential area in central Kowloon. The campus is compact but modern, with contemporary buildings including the striking Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre and the state-of-the-art science laboratories. The campus is well-connected by MTR (CityU Station is adjacent to the campus) and bus routes throughout Kowloon and Hong Kong Island.

The urban location means students have easy access to Hong Kong's commercial, cultural, and social amenities. Kowloon Tong is a pleasant neighborhood with parks, cafes, and shopping nearby. Students can reach Mong Kok (one of the world's densest shopping districts) in 10 minutes by MTR, Tsim Sha Tsui (the harborfront district) in 15 minutes, or Central on Hong Kong Island in 25 minutes.

Living costs follow Hong Kong norms. On-campus housing costs approximately 8,000-14,000 HKD per month. Off-campus apartments in surrounding areas start at around 8,000-16,000 HKD per month for a room. Monthly living expenses run approximately 6,000-12,000 HKD depending on lifestyle. Total annual cost ranges from $35,000-$55,000 USD.

Step 04

Admissions, costs, and scholarships

Tuition for international undergraduate students is approximately 161,000-180,000 HKD per year ($20,600-$23,100 USD). Master's program tuition varies: taught master's cost 140,000-280,000 HKD per year; research-based programs may offer tuition waivers with stipends. The veterinary medicine program has higher tuition reflecting clinical training costs.

Admission requirements include strong secondary school grades, standardized test scores (SAT/ACT/A-levels/IB for undergraduates; GRE/GMAT recommended for some graduate programs), IELTS 6.5+ or TOEFL 93+, and application essays. CityU's acceptance rate is approximately 25-35%, making it somewhat less selective than HKU or HKUST though still competitive.

Scholarship support includes CityU entrance scholarships for outstanding undergraduates, the HKPFS for doctoral candidates, and various departmental awards. The university also offers need-based financial assistance. CityU's scholarship pool may be slightly more accessible than at the 'big three' Hong Kong universities due to lower application volume for certain programs.

Step 05

What makes CityU different

CityU's defining characteristic is its professional orientation. While HKU emphasizes tradition and prestige, HKUST focuses on research excellence, and CUHK values bilingualism and community, CityU prioritizes preparing students for careers. This orientation shows up in curriculum design (more internships, industry projects, and practical components), career services (one of the most active placement offices among Hong Kong universities), and graduate outcomes (strong employment rates in Hong Kong's finance, legal, and technology sectors).

The School of Creative Media and the veterinary medicine program are genuinely unique offerings not available elsewhere in Hong Kong. For students interested in these fields, CityU is essentially the only option within the city. The creative media programs are particularly attractive for students who want to combine technical skills with artistic practice in an Asian context.

CityU is the right choice for students who want a practical, career-focused Hong Kong education at a slightly lower competitive threshold than HKU/HKUST/CUHK. It is also the best option for students interested in creative media or veterinary medicine. For those seeking maximum prestige or the most traditional academic experience, HKU or CUHK might be preferable.
