Step 01

Why DUT matters

Dalian University of Technology (大连理工大学, Dàlián Lǐgōng Dàxué, or DUT) is a Project 985 and Project 211 university and the leading engineering university in northeast China. Founded in 1949, DUT has particular strengths in chemical engineering, mechanics, civil engineering, and naval architecture. The university's location in Dalian — a major port city on the Bohai Sea — has shaped its research focus on maritime engineering, port construction, and ocean technology.

DUT's chemical engineering program is ranked among China's top five and has strong connections to Dalian's petrochemical industry. The naval architecture and ocean engineering program is one of China's best, benefiting from Dalian's shipbuilding industry — the city is home to Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Company, China's largest shipyard. The mechanics program, particularly in computational mechanics, has international recognition.

For international students, DUT offers strong engineering programs in a city that is one of China's most livable — Dalian is known for its clean air, coastal scenery, seafood culture, and more moderate climate than other northeast Chinese cities. The university has been expanding its international enrollment and now hosts over 1,500 international students.

Step 02

Programs for international students

DUT offers English-taught master's programs in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, Computer Science, and Business Administration. The chemical engineering and naval architecture programs are the strongest and most distinctive — they offer research opportunities directly connected to Dalian's industrial base.

The university also offers a Chinese-taught MBBS program through its medical school, though this is a relatively new addition and less established than medical programs at universities with longer medical histories. Students primarily interested in medicine should consider HUST, SYSU, or SCU instead.

Chinese-taught programs require HSK 5 for undergraduate admission and HSK 5 (score 210+) for graduate programs. English-taught programs require IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 80+. The application period runs from November through April.

Step 03

Dalian: China's seaside tech city

Dalian (大连) is a city of 7.5 million on the Liaodong Peninsula, jutting into the Bohai Sea. It is one of China's most beautiful cities — known for its coastal scenery, Russian and Japanese colonial architecture, seafood, and relatively clean environment. The city has a more moderate climate than inland northeast China, with warm summers and cold but not extreme winters. Dalian is sometimes called 'the Hong Kong of the North' for its cosmopolitan character.

Living costs in Dalian are moderate. Budget 1,500-2,500 RMB per month for food, transportation, and personal expenses. Dormitory accommodation costs 500-1,200 RMB per month. Dalian has an international airport with connections to major Chinese cities and select international destinations, including Japan and South Korea.

The international community in Dalian is smaller than in first-tier cities but well-established, with significant Japanese and Korean business communities. The city has a growing software and IT services sector, with companies like Accenture, Oracle, and Hitachi maintaining operations in Dalian's software park.

Step 04

Admissions and costs

Tuition for Chinese-taught undergraduate programs is approximately 18,000-22,000 RMB per year. English-taught master's programs cost 28,000-40,000 RMB per year. Doctoral programs cost 28,000-38,000 RMB per year. These rates are competitive, reflecting Dalian's lower cost structure compared to Beijing and Shanghai.

DUT values strong STEM backgrounds. For chemical engineering, a background in chemistry or chemical engineering is preferred. For naval architecture, physics or mechanical engineering backgrounds are relevant. Research experience strengthens applications.

DUT is a solid choice for engineering students who want a strong technical education in a beautiful coastal city at an affordable cost. It may not have the brand recognition of C9 universities, but its programs in chemical engineering and naval architecture are genuinely elite, and the quality of life in Dalian is among the best of any Chinese university city.
