Why ECNU matters
East China Normal University (华东师范大学, Huádōng Shīfàn Dàxué, or ECNU) is a Project 985 and Project 211 university and Shanghai's leading institution for education, psychology, and the humanities. Founded in 1951 on the campus of the former Great China University (大夏大学), ECNU has trained a significant proportion of the teachers and education administrators in eastern China. Its influence on Shanghai's education system — one of China's best-performing — is direct and substantial.
ECNU's strengths are in education, psychology, Chinese language and literature, geography, statistics, and software engineering. The university's psychology program is among China's top three, and its education school is the strongest in eastern China. The software engineering program, perhaps surprisingly for a normal university, is nationally competitive and benefits from Shanghai's technology industry.
For international students, ECNU offers a compelling combination: strong Chinese language programs, a less competitive academic culture than Fudan or SJTU, a beautiful campus, and Shanghai location. The university is particularly attractive for students interested in Chinese language education, psychology, or Chinese studies who want the Shanghai experience without the intensity of a C9 institution.
Programs for international students
ECNU is one of China's designated centers for Chinese language education and offers one of the country's most comprehensive Chinese language programs. The International Chinese Language Teacher Training Base at ECNU trains Chinese language instructors for deployment worldwide. The language program offers courses from beginner through advanced, with specialized tracks in business Chinese, HSK preparation, and Chinese culture. Class sizes are typically 12-18 students — smaller than at BLCU.
English-taught master's programs are available in International Chinese Language Education, Psychology, Business Administration, and Software Engineering. The International Chinese Language Education program is particularly strong and prepares students for careers teaching Chinese as a foreign language worldwide.
At the undergraduate level, ECNU offers Chinese-taught programs across the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and education. The university also offers a four-year English-taught program in Chinese Studies designed for international students. HSK requirements: HSK 4-5 for Chinese-taught undergraduate programs (some programs accept HSK 4), HSK 5 for graduate programs. English-taught programs require IELTS 6.0-6.5 or TOEFL 80-90+.
Campus and Shanghai life
ECNU's Zhongshan North Road campus is in Shanghai's Putuo district, about 20 minutes by metro from the city center. The campus is widely considered one of Shanghai's most beautiful — it features a central lake, willow-lined paths, and a mix of traditional and modern architecture. The campus atmosphere is more serene than Fudan's or SJTU's, reflecting the university's emphasis on education and the humanities.
The Minhang campus, in Shanghai's southwestern suburbs, houses science departments and newer facilities. It is connected to the main campus by shuttle bus and metro. International students are primarily based at the Zhongshan North Road campus, which is more conveniently located.
International dormitories cost 600-1,500 RMB per month. The surrounding area is well-developed with restaurants, shopping, and entertainment options. Budget 2,500-4,000 RMB per month for living expenses. The CSC scholarship and ECNU's own scholarships are available. ECNU's Chinese language program is particularly affordable at approximately 8,000-12,000 RMB per semester.
Admissions and costs
Tuition for Chinese-taught undergraduate programs is approximately 20,000-24,000 RMB per year. English-taught master's programs cost 30,000-45,000 RMB per year. The Chinese language program costs 8,000-12,000 RMB per semester. Doctoral programs cost 28,000-35,000 RMB per year.
ECNU's admission requirements are somewhat more accessible than C9 universities, particularly for Chinese language programs which accept beginners. For degree programs, HSK requirements are standard. The university values applicants with backgrounds in education, languages, social sciences, or psychology for its strongest programs.
ECNU is an excellent choice for students who want Shanghai location and strong Chinese language or education programs without the extreme competition of Fudan or SJTU. The more relaxed campus culture, beautiful grounds, and lower cost make it an attractive option for students who prioritize quality of life alongside academic quality.
