Step 01

Why Fudan matters

Fudan University (复旦大学, Fùdàn Dàxué) is Shanghai's top-ranked comprehensive university and one of China's C9 League institutions. Founded in 1905, it has particular strengths in the humanities, social sciences, medicine, and basic sciences. The name Fudan (复旦) comes from the classical Chinese text Shangshu, meaning 'returning dawn' — a name chosen to symbolize the university's founding mission of restoring Chinese education and intellectual vitality.

For international students, Fudan's primary advantage is location. Shanghai is China's most international city, with the largest expatriate community, the most diverse dining and entertainment scene, and the greatest concentration of multinational corporate headquarters. Fudan sits at the intersection of this global city and China's academic elite — a combination that is hard to replicate anywhere else.

Fudan is also notable for having one of the most developed international student support systems among Chinese universities. The International Students Office is professional and responsive, the English-taught program offerings are extensive, and the international community on campus is large and active. For students who want a China experience with a relatively softer landing, Fudan is an excellent choice.

Step 02

English-taught programs

Fudan offers one of the broadest ranges of English-taught programs among Chinese universities. At the master's level, English-taught programs are available in international relations, public policy, journalism, economics, finance, business administration (MBA through Fudan School of Management), biomedicine, and several engineering fields. The Fudan-Hong Kong University IMBA is a joint program that attracts students from across Asia.

At the undergraduate level, Fudan offers a Chinese-taught program specifically designed for international students in Chinese Language and Literature, plus English-taught programs in clinical medicine (MBBS), economics, and international politics. The MBBS program at Fudan's Shanghai Medical College is one of the most respected English-taught medical programs in China and is recognized by several international medical licensing authorities.

The School of International Cultural Exchange offers Chinese language programs at all levels, from beginner to advanced, and is one of the best language programs in Shanghai. Many international students begin with a semester or year of language study at Fudan before transitioning to a degree program.

Step 03

Campus and Shanghai life

Fudan's main campus is in Shanghai's Yangpu district, about 30 minutes by metro from the city center. The Handan Road campus houses most humanities, social science, and science departments. The Fenglin campus is home to the Shanghai Medical College. The Jiangwan campus, a newer development, houses the law school and selected science departments. All campuses are connected by shuttle bus.

The campus is pleasant and functional, though less architecturally striking than Beida or Tsinghua. International student dormitories are in the North Zone and offer single and double rooms at 800-1,800 RMB per month. Facilities include air conditioning, shared kitchens, and laundry rooms. The dormitories are well-maintained and centrally located on campus.

Shanghai itself is the major draw. The city offers an unmatched combination of international amenities, career opportunities, and cultural experiences. The French Concession, the Bund, Jing'an district, and Xintiandi provide Western-standard dining, shopping, and entertainment. The metro system is extensive and efficient. Shanghai Pudong and Hongqiao airports provide direct flights to virtually every major city worldwide. For international students, Shanghai's infrastructure makes daily life significantly easier than in most other Chinese cities.

Step 04

Admissions and costs

Fudan's admission requirements are stringent but not as extreme as Tsinghua or Beida. For Chinese-taught programs, HSK 5 (score 180+) is required for undergraduates; HSK 5 (score 210+) or HSK 6 for graduate programs. For English-taught programs, IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 90+ is typically required. The MBBS program has additional requirements including a biology background.

Tuition for Chinese-taught undergraduate programs is approximately 24,000 RMB per year. English-taught undergraduate programs (including MBBS) cost 38,000-65,000 RMB per year. Chinese-taught master's programs cost 28,000-34,000 RMB per year. English-taught master's programs cost 50,000-80,000 RMB per year. The MBA is the most expensive program at approximately 120,000 RMB.

Living costs in Shanghai are the highest in mainland China. Budget 3,000-5,000 RMB per month for food, transportation, and personal expenses, plus 1,500-2,000 RMB for dormitory housing. Off-campus apartments in the Yangpu district start at 3,500 RMB per month for a room in a shared apartment. The CSC scholarship stipend covers basic expenses in the dormitory but is tight for Shanghai living standards.

Step 05

What makes Fudan different

Fudan's academic culture is more open and cosmopolitan than most Chinese universities. The university has deep connections to Shanghai's international business community, and many programs include practical components — internships, consulting projects, and industry partnerships — that provide real-world experience alongside academic study.

The student body at Fudan is known for being more socially aware and engaged than the Chinese average. The university has a tradition of student debate and intellectual discourse that, while not as prominent as at Beida, is more active than at most other institutions. Fudan students are often described as having 'Fudan temperament' (复旦气质) — a combination of intellectual curiosity, social engagement, and cosmopolitan outlook.

For international students, Fudan provides the best balance of academic quality and livability among China's top universities. If you want the prestige of a C9 institution but also want access to Shanghai's international lifestyle, Fudan should be your top choice. If your primary goal is pure academic rigor in engineering or technology, Tsinghua may be more appropriate. If you want deep immersion in Chinese intellectual culture, Beida has the edge. Fudan occupies a comfortable middle ground that suits many international students well.
