Step 01

Why Jilin University matters

Jilin University (吉林大学, Jílín Dàxué, or JLU) is a Project 985 and Project 211 university and the largest university in China by enrollment, with over 70,000 students. This enormous size results from a series of mergers in 2000 that combined five institutions: the original Jilin University, Jilin University of Technology, Norman Bethune University of Medical Science, Changchun University of Science and Technology, and Changchun Posts and Telecommunications Institute. The result is a university that covers virtually every academic discipline.

JLU's strongest programs are in chemistry (ranked among China's top five), vehicle engineering (it is located in China's automotive capital, Changchun, home to FAW Group and the joint venture that produces Audi and Volkswagen cars for the Chinese market), law (ranked among China's top ten), and medicine (the Norman Bethune Health Science Center has a distinguished history). The university's chemistry department has produced several members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and is particularly strong in inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, and polymer chemistry.

For international students, JLU offers the breadth of a massive comprehensive university at costs that are among the lowest of any 985 institution. The university hosts over 2,500 international students from more than 100 countries, with particularly large cohorts from South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Africa.

Step 02

Programs for international students

JLU offers English-taught master's programs in Chemistry, Vehicle Engineering, Computer Science, Business Administration, International Relations, and several medical disciplines through the Norman Bethune Health Science Center. The MBBS program is popular and draws primarily from South Asian and African countries. The chemistry program provides access to nationally elite research facilities and faculty.

The Norman Bethune Health Science Center is named after the Canadian physician who served with the Chinese Communist forces during the anti-Japanese war and became a symbol of international solidarity in China. The medical school offers English-taught MBBS and master's programs. Clinical training takes place at the First Hospital of Jilin University, one of the largest hospitals in northeast China.

Chinese-taught programs cover virtually every discipline. HSK 5 is required for undergraduate admission; HSK 5 (score 210+) for graduate programs. English-taught programs require IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 80+. The Chinese language program at JLU is well-established and benefits from Changchun's immersive environment — English is not widely spoken in the city, forcing daily use of Chinese.

Step 03

Changchun: China's auto city

Changchun (长春) is a city of 9 million and the capital of Jilin province. It is known primarily as China's automotive capital — FAW Group (第一汽车集团), China's largest automobile manufacturer, is headquartered here. The city also has a significant film industry (the Changchun Film Studio was the first film production base of the People's Republic) and is home to the Northeast Film Festival. Winters are severe, with temperatures regularly reaching -25°C and heavy snow.

Living costs in Changchun are among the lowest of any Chinese city hosting a 985 university. Budget 1,200-2,000 RMB per month for food, transportation, and personal expenses. Dormitory accommodation costs 400-1,000 RMB per month. The CSC stipend goes very far in Changchun. High-speed rail connects Changchun to Shenyang (1.5 hours), Dalian (3 hours), and Beijing (5 hours).

The international community in Changchun is small. The city has fewer international amenities than coastal cities, and English is not widely spoken outside the university. For students seeking maximum language immersion and minimum cost, this is an advantage. For students who want a more cosmopolitan environment, it may feel isolating.

Step 04

Admissions and costs

Tuition for Chinese-taught undergraduate programs is approximately 16,000-20,000 RMB per year. English-taught undergraduate programs (MBBS) cost 30,000-40,000 RMB per year. English-taught master's programs cost 25,000-38,000 RMB per year. Doctoral programs cost 25,000-35,000 RMB per year. These are among the lowest tuition rates of any 985 university.

JLU's admission requirements are moderate by 985 standards. The chemistry and vehicle engineering programs are more competitive, while other programs have more accessible admission. The MBBS program requires strong science backgrounds. The application period runs from November through May.

JLU is one of the best-value 985 universities in China. The combination of comprehensive academic offerings, very low costs, and the immersive language environment of Changchun makes it an attractive option for budget-conscious students. The trade-off is the severe winters and limited international amenities.
