Why Nankai matters
Nankai University (南开大学, Nánkāi Dàxué) is a Project 985 and Project 211 university and one of China's most prestigious institutions. Founded in 1919 by the patriotic educators Zhang Boling and Yan Xiu, Nankai has a history closely tied to Chinese nationalism and intellectual independence. The university's motto — 'Dedication to public duties, pursuit of daily self-improvement' (允公允能, 日新月异) — reflects its founding mission of producing citizens who would strengthen China.
Nankai's strengths are in chemistry (ranked among China's top five), economics (one of the earliest and most influential economics departments in China), mathematics (the institute that produced Shiing-Shen Chern, one of the 20th century's greatest mathematicians), and history (particularly modern Chinese history and the history of the Japanese occupation). The economics department has been particularly influential in Chinese policy — several of China's finance ministers and central bank officials are Nankai alumni.
For international students, Nankai offers a combination of academic prestige, strong programs in several key disciplines, and a location in Tianjin — China's fourth-largest city and a major port that is just 30 minutes from Beijing by high-speed rail. The university is smaller and more intimate than Tsinghua or Beida, with a campus culture that values intellectual seriousness over competition.
Programs for international students
Nankai offers English-taught master's programs in International Economics, Business Administration, Chinese Studies, Chemistry, and several engineering disciplines. The economics programs are the flagship — Nankai's School of Economics has been shaping Chinese economic policy since the 1930s, and its faculty include some of China's most influential economists. The international economics program provides a deep understanding of China's economic system and its integration with the global economy.
The Chinese Studies program is designed for international students who want a comprehensive understanding of Chinese culture, history, and society. It combines language training with coursework in Chinese philosophy, literature, art, and politics. The program benefits from Tianjin's historical significance — the city was a treaty port with extensive foreign concessions, and its architecture and cultural heritage reflect this international history.
Chinese-taught programs require HSK 5 for undergraduate admission and HSK 5 (score 210+) for graduate programs. English-taught programs require IELTS 6.0-6.5 or TOEFL 80-90+. The Chinese language program at Nankai is well-regarded and offers courses from beginner through advanced levels.
Tianjin: Beijing's neighbor finds its own identity
Tianjin (天津) is a city of 15 million and one of China's four directly-administered municipalities (alongside Beijing, Shanghai, and Chongqing). It is a major port city with a rich history as a treaty port — its architecture includes Italian, French, British, and German colonial buildings that create a distinctive urban landscape. The city is known for its food (Tianjin-style jianbing guozi, or savory crepes, are famous throughout China), its cross-talk (相声, xiangsheng) comedy tradition, and its relatively relaxed pace of life compared to Beijing.
The city's proximity to Beijing is both an advantage and a complication. High-speed rail connects the two cities in 30 minutes, making it easy to access Beijing's cultural and professional opportunities. However, Tianjin is sometimes overshadowed by its larger neighbor and has a less dynamic economy. For students, this means lower living costs with easy access to the capital.
Living costs in Tianjin are moderate. Budget 2,000-3,000 RMB per month for food, transportation, and personal expenses. Dormitory accommodation costs 600-1,200 RMB per month. The city has an international airport, extensive metro system, and good high-speed rail connections throughout northern China.
Admissions and costs
Tuition for Chinese-taught undergraduate programs is approximately 20,000-24,000 RMB per year. English-taught master's programs cost 30,000-45,000 RMB per year. Doctoral programs cost 28,000-38,000 RMB per year. These rates are moderate for a 985 university, reflecting Tianjin's position between first-tier and second-tier city costs.
Nankai values strong academic backgrounds appropriate to each program. The economics programs are competitive and prefer applicants with economics, mathematics, or related backgrounds. Chemistry programs value strong science preparation. The Chinese Studies program is more accessible and designed for students from various academic backgrounds.
Nankai is an excellent choice for students interested in economics, chemistry, or Chinese studies who want a prestigious degree at a moderate cost. The university's proximity to Beijing, its intimate campus atmosphere, and its tradition of intellectual seriousness make it a distinctive option within China's 985 landscape.
