Step 01

Why NUDT matters

The National University of Defense Technology (国防科技大学, Guófáng Kējì Dàxué, or NUDT) is China's top military research university and one of the most technologically advanced institutions in the country. Founded in 1953 as the Military Academy of Engineering (军事工程学院, or Harbin Military Academy), NUDT was relocated to Changsha in 1970. It is the only Project 985 university under the direct administration of the Central Military Commission, and its research is deeply integrated with China's defense and security apparatus.

NUDT's strengths are in computer science (it developed the Tianhe supercomputers, which ranked #1 on the TOP500 list of the world's fastest supercomputers in 2010 and 2013), aerospace engineering, information and communication systems, and optical engineering. The university's contributions to China's Beidou navigation satellite system, its quantum communication research, and its supercomputing achievements place it at the frontier of China's technological capabilities.

For international students, NUDT presents a unique situation. The university is primarily a military institution, and access is restricted. However, NUDT does admit a limited number of international students to certain non-classified programs, particularly in computer science, mathematics, and some engineering disciplines. Prospective students should understand that the experience here is fundamentally different from attending a civilian Chinese university.

Step 02

Programs available to international students

International students at NUDT are limited to specific programs that have been approved for foreign enrollment. These typically include master's and doctoral programs in Computer Science and Technology, Software Engineering, Mathematics, and selected engineering disciplines. Programs involving defense research, classified technology, or military applications are not available to international students.

The computer science programs accessible to international students are strong — NUDT's CS department is one of the best in China, and students benefit from the university's computing infrastructure, which includes access to advanced high-performance computing resources. Research supervision is available in areas including artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, and network security.

The application process for international students at NUDT is more complex than at civilian universities. Additional security review procedures may apply, and processing times can be longer. Applicants should begin the process early and be prepared for additional documentation requirements. English-taught programs require IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 90+. Chinese-taught programs require HSK 5 (score 210+) or above.

Step 03

Campus and Changsha life

NUDT's campus in Changsha reflects its military character. The campus is more regimented than civilian universities — dress codes, structured schedules, and physical fitness requirements may apply even to international students, though with some relaxation compared to military cadets. Facilities are modern and well-maintained, with computing resources that exceed those available at most civilian universities.

Changsha offers the same advantages described in the CSU guide: low costs, good food, and a growing technology sector. Budget 1,500-2,500 RMB per month for living expenses. However, international students at NUDT may have less freedom to explore the city independently compared to students at civilian universities, depending on the specific program and security classification.

The international student community at NUDT is very small — typically fewer than 100 students at any given time. This means more individual attention but fewer social opportunities with other international students. The campus is primarily populated by Chinese military cadets and civilian researchers, creating an environment very different from the cosmopolitan atmosphere of universities like BLCU or Fudan.

Step 04

Admissions and costs — with important caveats

Tuition for international students is approximately 25,000-35,000 RMB per year for master's programs and 28,000-38,000 RMB per year for doctoral programs. Housing is provided on campus at subsidized rates of 500-1,000 RMB per month. CSC scholarships are available for qualified applicants.

The most important caveat for prospective international students is access. NUDT's primary mission is defense research, and the university restricts international enrollment significantly. Not all programs are open to foreign students, and even admitted students may face limitations on research topics, laboratory access, and campus movement. Students from certain countries may face additional restrictions.

NUDT is the right choice only for a very specific type of international student: one who wants access to China's most advanced computing and engineering resources and is comfortable operating within the constraints of a military institution. For most international students, civilian universities with strong computer science programs — Tsinghua, Zhejiang University, UESTC — offer a more accessible and less restrictive path to similar academic outcomes.
