Step 01

Why NPU matters

Northwestern Polytechnical University (西北工业大学, Xīběi Gōngyè Dàxué, or NPU) is a Project 985 and Project 211 university and China's only institution that excels simultaneously in aeronautics, astronautics, and marine engineering — a combination known as the 'Three Aviations' (三航). Founded in 1938, NPU was formed by the merger of several institutions during China's wartime relocation. It has been deeply involved in China's aerospace and defense programs, contributing to the Shenzhou spacecraft, the Long March rocket series, and the development of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

NPU's strengths are in aeronautical engineering (aircraft design and flight mechanics), astronautical engineering (spacecraft design and propulsion), marine engineering (underwater vehicles and naval architecture), materials science (particularly for aerospace applications), and mechanical engineering. The university operates the State Key Laboratory of Solidification Processing and the National Key Laboratory of Aerodynamic Design and Research.

For international students, NPU offers something distinctive: access to China's aerospace and marine engineering research infrastructure at a level matched only by Beihang and HIT. However, unlike Beihang (which focuses primarily on aerospace) and HIT (which spans broader engineering domains), NPU uniquely combines aerospace and marine engineering, reflecting the 'Three Aviations' philosophy that sees these domains as interconnected.

Step 02

Programs for international students

NPU offers English-taught master's programs in Aeronautical Engineering, Astronautical Engineering, Marine Engineering, Materials Science, Computer Science, and Business Administration. The aeronautical and astronautical programs are the strongest — they provide access to wind tunnels, propulsion test facilities, and flight simulation systems that are among the most advanced in China. Research topics include UAV design, spacecraft guidance systems, and composite materials for aerospace applications.

The marine engineering program focuses on autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), deep-sea exploration technology, and marine propulsion systems. This is a relatively niche field but one with growing international importance as deep-sea resource exploration expands.

Chinese-taught programs require HSK 5 for undergraduate admission and HSK 5 (score 210+) for graduate programs. English-taught programs require IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 80+. The application period runs from November through April. Note that some research areas involving defense technology may have access restrictions for international students.

Step 03

Xi'an: ancient capital, modern tech

NPU's campus is in Xi'an, and the city's advantages are described in the Xi'an Jiaotong University guide. Xi'an offers a unique combination of world-class historical sites (Terracotta Army, City Wall, Muslim Quarter), a growing technology sector, and very low living costs. Budget 1,500-2,500 RMB per month for food, transportation, and personal expenses. Dormitory accommodation costs 500-1,200 RMB per month.

NPU's campus is in the city's western district, adjacent to Xi'an's high-tech development zone. The campus is functional and well-equipped with specialized laboratories, though less architecturally impressive than XJTU's. The surrounding area has good amenities and is well-connected by metro.

The international student community at NPU is small — typically a few hundred students, primarily from Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. The campus atmosphere is technical and focused, with less of the cultural and social diversity found at larger universities. For students who are serious about aerospace or marine engineering and less concerned about a vibrant social scene, this focused environment may be an advantage.

Step 04

Admissions and costs

Tuition for Chinese-taught undergraduate programs is approximately 18,000-22,000 RMB per year. English-taught master's programs cost 28,000-40,000 RMB per year. Doctoral programs cost 28,000-38,000 RMB per year. These rates are standard for a 985 university in a second-tier city.

NPU values strong STEM backgrounds. For aerospace programs, physics or mechanical engineering degrees are preferred. For marine engineering, naval architecture or ocean engineering backgrounds are relevant. Research experience in aerospace or marine technology significantly strengthens applications.

NPU is a specialized institution best suited for students with clear interests in aerospace, astronautics, or marine engineering. For these fields, it is among the top three choices in China alongside Beihang and HIT. The combination of 'Three Aviations' expertise, affordable costs in Xi'an, and genuine research depth makes it an excellent value for the right student.
