Why OUC matters
Ocean University of China (中国海洋大学, Zhōngguó Hǎiyáng Dàxué, or OUC) is a Project 985 and Project 211 university and China's leading institution for marine and ocean sciences. Founded in 1924 as the Qingdao Ocean University, OUC has been at the center of China's oceanographic research for a century. In a country with 18,000 kilometers of coastline and an increasingly assertive maritime strategy, the work done at OUC has national significance.
OUC's strengths are in oceanography, marine biology, fisheries science, marine chemistry, and ocean technology. The university operates the State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science and several national engineering research centers focused on marine resources. Its research spans from deep-sea exploration to aquaculture optimization, from marine drug discovery to ocean climate modeling.
For international students, OUC offers something that no other Chinese university provides: deep expertise in marine science combined with a location in Qingdao — one of China's most beautiful and livable coastal cities. If your interests lie in oceanography, marine biology, fisheries, or maritime affairs, OUC should be your first choice in China.
Programs for international students
OUC offers English-taught master's programs in Oceanography, Marine Biology, Fisheries Science, Environmental Science, and Business Administration. The oceanography and marine biology programs are the flagship — they provide access to research vessels, marine laboratories, and field stations along China's coast. The university operates the research vessel Dongfanghong 3, a state-of-the-art oceanographic research ship that students may join for research cruises.
The fisheries science program is nationally leading and internationally relevant. China is the world's largest producer of aquaculture products, and OUC's research on sustainable aquaculture, marine food safety, and fisheries management has direct practical applications. The program attracts students from countries with significant fishing and aquaculture industries.
Chinese-taught programs cover a broader range of disciplines including law, economics, and foreign languages alongside the marine science core. HSK 5 is required for Chinese-taught programs; English-taught programs require IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 80+. The application period runs from November through April.
Qingdao: China's sailing city
Qingdao (青岛) is a city of 10 million on the Shandong peninsula, famous for its beaches, beer (the Tsingtao Brewery was founded here by German settlers in 1903), and European-influenced architecture. The city hosted the sailing events for the 2008 Beijing Olympics and has since developed a strong maritime culture. Qingdao is consistently ranked among China's most livable cities — it has cleaner air than most Chinese cities, pleasant summers, and a relaxed coastal lifestyle.
Living costs in Qingdao are moderate. Budget 1,500-2,500 RMB per month for food, transportation, and personal expenses. Dormitory accommodation costs 500-1,200 RMB per month. The city has an international airport, high-speed rail connections to Beijing (3 hours) and Shanghai (4 hours), and a growing international community.
Qingdao's seafood culture is outstanding — the city's fish market and seafood restaurants are among China's best. The combination of marine science expertise and a seafood-centered food culture means that OUC students experience a rare alignment between academic study and daily life.
Admissions and costs
Tuition for Chinese-taught undergraduate programs is approximately 16,000-20,000 RMB per year. English-taught master's programs cost 25,000-38,000 RMB per year. Doctoral programs cost 25,000-35,000 RMB per year. These rates are among the most affordable of any 985 university.
OUC values applicants with backgrounds in biology, chemistry, environmental science, or related fields. For marine science programs, prior coursework in the natural sciences is preferred. The application process is relatively accessible compared to C9 universities.
OUC is a niche institution but an excellent one within its domain. For students who want to study marine science, oceanography, or fisheries in China, there is simply no better option. The combination of world-class marine research, a beautiful coastal city, and affordable costs makes OUC an outstanding value proposition for the right student.
