Step 01

Why Shandong University matters

Shandong University (山东大学, Shāndōng Dàxué, or SDU) is a Project 985 and Project 211 university with a history dating back to 1901, making it one of China's oldest modern universities. Founded as Shandong University College by the Qing dynasty governor of Shandong, it was the second national university established in China after Peking University. The university has over 60,000 students across its three campuses and is one of the largest comprehensive institutions in the country.

SDU's strengths are in mathematics (ranked among China's top five, with notable contributions to cryptography and number theory), Chinese language and literature (Shandong is the birthplace of Confucius, and SDU's programs in classical Chinese studies benefit from this cultural heritage), clinical medicine (its Qilu Hospital is one of China's oldest and most respected), and materials science. The mathematics department has produced several internationally recognized researchers, including fields medal-caliber work in number theory.

For international students, SDU offers a combination of historical prestige, strong programs in several key fields, and a location in Shandong — one of China's most economically important provinces and the cultural heartland of Confucian civilization. The university's three-campus structure provides options ranging from the provincial capital (Jinan) to the coastal beauty of Qingdao and Weihai.

Step 02

Programs for international students

SDU offers English-taught master's programs in Mathematics, Computer Science, Clinical Medicine, Business Administration, International Relations, and several engineering disciplines. The mathematics program is the academic flagship — it provides access to faculty who are leaders in their fields and research opportunities in pure and applied mathematics. The clinical medicine program at Qilu Hospital offers English-taught MBBS and master's options.

The Chinese language and culture programs at SDU are strong, benefiting from Shandong's status as the birthplace of Confucius and Chinese civilization. The university offers specialized programs in classical Chinese, Confucian studies, and Chinese archaeology that draw on the region's extraordinary historical resources. The city of Qufu, Confucius's hometown and the site of the Confucius Temple, is within easy reach.

Chinese-taught programs require HSK 5 for undergraduate admission and HSK 5 (score 210+) for graduate programs. English-taught programs require IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 80+. The application period runs from November through April.

Step 03

Three campuses: Jinan, Qingdao, and Weihai

The Jinan campus is SDU's main base and houses most humanities, social science, and science departments. Jinan is the capital of Shandong province, a city of 9 million known for its natural springs (it is called the 'City of Springs,' 泉城). The city is functional but not especially scenic — it serves primarily as an administrative and economic center. Living costs are moderate: budget 1,500-2,500 RMB per month.

The Qingdao campus, opened in 2016, is SDU's newest and most attractive location. Qingdao is a coastal city of 10 million famous for its beer, beaches, and German colonial architecture. The campus is modern and well-equipped, and the city provides a significantly more pleasant environment than Jinan — cleaner air, ocean breezes, and a more international atmosphere. Living costs are slightly higher but still moderate.

The Weihai campus is in a smaller coastal city known for its pleasant climate and beaches. It offers a quieter, more intimate academic environment. International students are primarily based at the Jinan and Qingdao campuses, with Weihai serving mainly domestic undergraduates.

Step 04

Admissions and costs

Tuition for Chinese-taught undergraduate programs is approximately 16,000-22,000 RMB per year. English-taught undergraduate programs (MBBS) cost 32,000-42,000 RMB per year. English-taught master's programs cost 26,000-40,000 RMB per year. Doctoral programs cost 26,000-36,000 RMB per year.

SDU values strong academic backgrounds appropriate to each program. The mathematics program is competitive and prefers applicants with exceptional quantitative skills. The medicine program requires strong science backgrounds. Chinese literature programs value prior study of Chinese language and culture.

SDU is a solid value choice, particularly for students interested in mathematics, Chinese studies, or medicine. The multi-campus structure allows students to choose their preferred environment — urban Jinan, coastal Qingdao, or relaxed Weihai — while accessing the same university's academic resources and degree. The Confucian cultural heritage of Shandong adds a dimension of intellectual and historical depth that few other Chinese university locations can match.
