Step 01

Why SCUT matters

South China University of Technology (华南理工大学, Huánán Lǐgōng Dàxué, or SCUT) is a Project 985 and Project 211 university and one of the top engineering institutions in southern China. Founded in 1952, SCUT has particular strengths in architecture, food science and engineering, materials science, chemical engineering, and light industry. The university's origins are in the South China Institute of Technology, which was established by consolidating the engineering departments of several universities in the region.

SCUT's architecture school is one of China's top three and shares the Pearl River Delta stage with Tongji University's architectural influence in Shanghai. The university's food science program is ranked #1 in China, reflecting Guangdong's role as China's food processing and manufacturing hub. The light industry and paper engineering programs are nationally leading — a niche but important area given China's position as the world's largest paper and packaging producer.

For international students, SCUT offers engineering programs that are particularly relevant to the Pearl River Delta's economy. The region is China's manufacturing heartland, producing everything from electronics to textiles to automobiles. SCUT's connections to this industrial ecosystem provide research opportunities and career pathways that are distinctive to this university.

Step 02

Programs for international students

SCUT offers English-taught master's programs in Architecture, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Business Administration, and Food Science and Engineering. The architecture program is the flagship — it provides studio-based design education with a focus on subtropical and tropical architecture that is relevant to much of the developing world. The food science program offers research opportunities in food safety, food processing, and nutrition that draw on Guangdong's massive food industry.

The MBA at SCUT's School of Business Administration is available in English and benefits from the university's location in Guangzhou, one of China's major commercial centers. The program includes practical components such as company visits, consulting projects, and industry mentorship that leverage the Pearl River Delta business community.

Chinese-taught programs require HSK 5 for undergraduate admission and HSK 5 (score 210+) for graduate programs. English-taught programs require IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 80+. The Chinese language program at SCUT is functional and serves as a pathway to degree study.

Step 03

Campus and Guangzhou life

SCUT's Wushan campus (五山校区) is in Guangzhou's Tianhe district, the city's business center. This location is significantly more central than many university campuses, providing easy access to Guangzhou's commercial district, shopping, and entertainment. The campus is modern and well-maintained, with the architecture school's design studios being a notable feature — the building itself is a prize-winning example of contemporary Chinese architecture.

The Guangzhou International Campus (广州国际校区), opened in 2019, is a newer development in Panyu district that houses several international joint programs and English-taught offerings. This campus represents SCUT's push toward greater internationalization and offers modern facilities designed specifically for international education.

Living costs and lifestyle in Guangzhou are described in the SYSU guide. Budget 2,500-4,000 RMB per month for living expenses. Dormitory accommodation costs 800-1,500 RMB per month. Guangzhou's excellent food scene, warm climate, and Pearl River Delta connectivity make it an attractive city for international students.

Step 04

Admissions and costs

Tuition for Chinese-taught undergraduate programs is approximately 20,000-24,000 RMB per year. English-taught master's programs cost 30,000-45,000 RMB per year. Doctoral programs cost 28,000-38,000 RMB per year. These rates are moderate for a 985 university in a first-tier city.

SCUT values strong STEM backgrounds for engineering programs and design portfolios for architecture programs. The architecture program requires portfolio submission and may include an interview. The food science program prefers applicants with chemistry or biology backgrounds.

SCUT is a strong choice for engineering students who want access to the Pearl River Delta's industrial and commercial ecosystem. While less internationally known than SYSU, SCUT's engineering programs are among the best in southern China, and its industry connections in the region are unmatched.
