Step 01

Why Tianjin University matters

Tianjin University (天津大学, Tiānjīn Dàxué, or TJU) holds the distinction of being China's oldest modern university. Founded in 1895 as the Peiyang University (北洋大学), it was the first institution of higher learning in China modeled on Western educational principles. Its establishment marked the beginning of modern higher education in China, and its founding charter — drafted by the Qing dynasty reformer Sheng Xuanhuai — declared that China needed 'Western learning for practical application' (中学为体, 西学为用). This practical orientation has defined TJU ever since.

TJU's strengths are in chemical engineering (ranked among China's top three), architecture (one of China's top four, alongside Tsinghua, Tongji, and SEU), mechanical engineering, and management science. The university's chemical engineering program has been instrumental in developing China's petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries. Its architecture school, founded in 1937, has shaped the built environment of cities across northern China.

For international students, TJU offers strong engineering programs with a distinctive practical emphasis. The university has closer ties to industry than many research-oriented peers, and its graduates are known for being technically competent and immediately productive in professional settings. If you want an engineering education that emphasizes hands-on capability alongside theoretical knowledge, TJU is a strong choice.

Step 02

Programs for international students

TJU offers English-taught master's programs in Chemical Engineering, Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Civil Engineering, and Business Administration. The chemical engineering program is the flagship — it provides access to nationally leading research facilities and faculty with deep industry connections. The architecture program requires a portfolio submission and is competitive.

The School of International Education manages a well-organized Chinese language program that serves as a pathway to degree study. TJU also offers a combined program where international students study Chinese for one year before transitioning to a Chinese-taught degree program. This structure is well-suited for students who arrive with limited Chinese proficiency but want to pursue a Chinese-taught degree.

Chinese-taught programs require HSK 5 for undergraduate admission and HSK 5 (score 210+) for graduate programs. English-taught programs require IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 80+. The application period runs from November through April.

Step 03

Campus and Tianjin life

TJU's Peiyang Park campus, opened in 2015, is a modern, purpose-built campus in Tianjin's Jinnan district. It is spacious, well-equipped, and architecturally distinctive — the campus design won several awards. The older Weijin Road campus, closer to the city center, houses some departments and administrative offices. International students are based at both campuses depending on their program.

Tianjin's advantages and characteristics are described in the Nankai University guide. The two universities are located in the same city and share some resources. Budget 2,000-3,000 RMB per month for living expenses. Dormitory accommodation costs 600-1,200 RMB per month.

TJU's campus culture is more technically oriented and less politically engaged than Nankai's. If Nankai is the university of economists and historians, TJU is the university of engineers and architects. This distinction plays out in campus life — TJU has stronger engineering competitions, hackathons, and industry partnerships, while Nankai has more active debate societies, policy discussions, and cultural events.

Step 04

Admissions and costs

Tuition for Chinese-taught undergraduate programs is approximately 20,000-24,000 RMB per year. English-taught master's programs cost 30,000-45,000 RMB per year. Doctoral programs cost 28,000-38,000 RMB per year. These rates are comparable to Nankai's.

TJU values strong STEM backgrounds for engineering programs and design portfolios for architecture. The chemical engineering program is competitive and prefers applicants with chemistry or chemical engineering degrees. The architecture program requires a portfolio review and may include an interview.

TJU is a strong choice for engineering students who value practical, industry-connected education. While it lacks the international brand recognition of Tsinghua, its chemical engineering and architecture programs are genuinely elite, and its proximity to Beijing combined with Tianjin's lower costs provides a compelling value proposition.
