Step 01

Why USTC matters

The University of Science and Technology of China (中国科学技术大学, Zhōngguó Kēxué Jìshù Dàxué, or USTC) is a C9 League university with a singular focus: science. Founded in 1958 by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), USTC was created to train China's next generation of scientists and has maintained that mission more purely than any other top Chinese university. It is consistently ranked among China's top five universities and the world's top 100.

USTC's strengths are in physics, chemistry, mathematics, materials science, and quantum information. The university is at the center of China's quantum computing research — the world's first quantum communication satellite, Micius, was developed by USTC researchers. If you are a physics or quantum computing student, USTC offers research opportunities available at very few institutions worldwide.

The university's location in Hefei, Anhui province, is less internationally known than Beijing or Shanghai but has become one of China's most important science and technology hubs. Hefei is home to multiple national laboratories, including the Hefei National Laboratory for Physical Sciences at the Microscale and the National Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory. The city has been designated as one of China's comprehensive national science centers.

Step 02

Programs for international students

USTC offers English-taught master's and doctoral programs in physics, chemistry, materials science, computer science, and several engineering fields. The programs are research-intensive and designed for students who plan to pursue careers in scientific research. The teaching quality is high — USTC faculty are primarily CAS researchers who are active at the frontiers of their fields.

The university is less suited for students interested in humanities, social sciences, or business. While these departments exist, they are not USTC's strength, and the English-taught offerings in these areas are limited. USTC is for students who know they want to do science.

The Chinese language program at USTC is functional but not a primary focus. If your goal is primarily Chinese language study, BLCU or another language-focused university would be more appropriate. If your goal is cutting-edge scientific research with Chinese language as a secondary objective, USTC is an excellent choice.

Step 03

Hefei: China's rising science city

Hefei is a city of 9 million people that has transformed from a relatively obscure provincial capital into one of China's most important science and technology centers. The transformation has been driven by massive government investment in research infrastructure and the presence of USTC and CAS facilities. The city is clean, modern, and significantly more affordable than first-tier cities.

For international students, Hefei offers strong immersion — the international community is small, and you will use Chinese in daily life. The city has good infrastructure including a metro system, high-speed rail to Shanghai (2 hours) and Beijing (4 hours), and an international airport. The food culture is excellent, with Anhui cuisine being one of China's eight great culinary traditions.

The trade-off is limited international amenities. Hefei has fewer international restaurants, bars, and social venues than Beijing or Shanghai. The expatriate community is small and primarily consists of USTC researchers and teachers. For some students, this isolation is challenging; for others, it is precisely the immersion environment they want.

Step 04

Admissions and costs

USTC values strong academic backgrounds in science. For graduate programs, a bachelor's or master's degree in a relevant scientific field with strong grades is essential. HSK requirements for Chinese-taught programs follow the standard pattern. English-taught programs require IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 80+. Research experience and publications strengthen your application significantly.

Tuition is among the most affordable of the C9 universities: approximately 20,000 RMB per year for Chinese-taught undergraduate programs, 25,000-30,000 RMB per year for graduate programs. English-taught programs cost 30,000-45,000 RMB per year. Living costs in Hefei are very low — budget 1,500-2,500 RMB per month for food and personal expenses, with dormitory accommodation at 500-1,000 RMB per month.

USTC's CSC scholarship allocation is substantial, and the low cost of living in Hefei means that the CSC stipend provides a comfortable lifestyle. For science students who want to maximize their research time and minimize their financial concerns, USTC is one of the best value propositions in Chinese higher education.
