Step 01

Why XJTU matters

Xi'an Jiao Tong University (西安交通大学, Xī'ān Jiāotōng Dàxué, or XJTU) is a C9 League university and one of China's oldest institutions of higher learning. Founded in Shanghai in 1896 as part of the same original institution as SJTU, XJTU was relocated to Xi'an during the 1950s as part of China's strategic westward development plan. This relocation gave Xi'an one of the country's strongest technical universities and established XJTU as a cornerstone of western China's higher education system.

XJTU's strengths are in energy and power engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science, electrical engineering, and management. The university operates several national key laboratories and has been instrumental in China's development of nuclear power, high-voltage transmission, and advanced manufacturing technologies. Its School of Management is among the best in China and was the first business school in mainland China to receive AACSB accreditation.

For international students, XJTU offers the combination of C9 prestige, strong engineering programs, and a city rich with history and culture. Xi'an is significantly more affordable than Beijing or Shanghai while providing access to world-class historical sites and a growing technology sector.

Step 02

Programs for international students

XJTU offers English-taught master's programs in energy and power engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, information systems, and management. The programs are well-established and attract students from across Asia, Africa, and Europe. The teaching quality is high, and many faculty members have international research experience.

The university also runs a robust Chinese language program through its International Education College. Class sizes are typically smaller than at BLCU or Peking University, providing more individual attention. Xi'an is an excellent environment for language immersion — the city has fewer English speakers than first-tier cities, which accelerates language acquisition.

For Chinese-taught degree programs, HSK 5 (score 180+) is required for undergraduates and HSK 5 (score 210+) for graduates. The university's medical school, part of the former Xi'an Medical University, offers clinical medicine programs including an English-taught MBBS option.

Step 03

Xi'an: history meets modernity

Xi'an served as the capital of China for over 1,000 years across thirteen dynasties, making it one of the most historically significant cities in the world. The Terracotta Army, the City Wall, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, and countless other historical sites make Xi'an a remarkable place to live and study. The city's Muslim Quarter offers a unique culinary and cultural experience found nowhere else in China.

Modern Xi'an is a major industrial and technological center. The city hosts the headquarters of Huawei's mobile phone division, major semiconductor fabrication plants, and a growing aerospace industry. High-speed rail connects Xi'an to Beijing (4 hours) and Chengdu (3 hours), and the airport serves domestic and international routes.

Living costs in Xi'an are among the lowest of any major Chinese city. A comfortable student budget is 1,500-2,500 RMB per month for food, transportation, and personal expenses. Dormitory accommodation costs 600-1,200 RMB per month. The combination of low costs and rich cultural life makes Xi'an one of the best value destinations for international students in China.

Step 04

Admissions and costs

XJTU follows standard C9 admission requirements. HSK 5 for Chinese-taught undergraduate programs, HSK 5 (score 210+) for graduate programs. English-taught programs require IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 80+. The application process runs from October through April, with CSC scholarship deadlines in late March.

Tuition for Chinese-taught undergraduate programs is approximately 20,000 RMB per year. Chinese-taught master's programs cost 25,000-30,000 RMB per year. English-taught master's programs cost 35,000-50,000 RMB per year. These rates are lower than at first-tier city C9 universities, reflecting Xi'an's lower cost structure.

XJTU's CSC scholarship allocation is generous, and the low local cost of living means that scholarship recipients can live comfortably. Self-funded study is also more feasible here than at Beijing or Shanghai universities. For students who prioritize value without sacrificing academic quality, XJTU is an excellent choice.
