Why Zhejiang University matters
Zhejiang University (浙江大学, Zhèjiāng Dàxué, or Zheda) is a C9 League university and one of China's most dynamic institutions. With over 60,000 students across multiple campuses, it is China's largest comprehensive university by enrollment. Founded in 1897, Zheda has particular strengths in engineering, computer science, agricultural science, medicine, and management. It is consistently ranked among China's top three universities and the top 50 globally.
Zheda's location in Hangzhou is a significant advantage. Hangzhou is home to Alibaba, Ant Group, and one of China's most vibrant technology ecosystems. The city is beautiful — centered on the West Lake, a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and is more livable than Beijing or Shanghai, with cleaner air, lower costs, and a more relaxed pace. High-speed rail connects Hangzhou to Shanghai in 45 minutes.
For international students, Zheda offers the combination of C9 prestige, strong English-taught programs in engineering and business, and a city that provides both high quality of life and access to China's digital economy. It is particularly attractive for students interested in technology, e-commerce, and entrepreneurship.
English-taught programs
Zheda offers English-taught master's programs in computer science, electrical engineering, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, public management, international business, and Chinese studies. The programs are well-established, with many running for over a decade. The International Campus in Haining, about 60 kilometers from Hangzhou, houses joint institute programs with the University of Edinburgh (biomedical sciences) and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (engineering).
The ZJU-UIUC Institute and ZJU-UoE Institute offer undergraduate programs taught in English by internationally recruited faculty. Students in these programs receive degrees from both Zhejiang University and the partner institution. These are among the most genuinely international programs available at any Chinese university — not merely Chinese programs translated into English, but curricula designed and delivered in collaboration with top Western universities.
For Chinese-taught programs, HSK 5 (score 180+) is required for undergraduate admission and HSK 5 (score 210+) for graduate programs. The language programs at Zheda's International College are well-regarded and serve as a pathway for students who need to reach the required HSK level before beginning degree study.
Campus and Hangzhou life
Zheda's main campus, Zijingang (紫金港), is a vast modern campus in northwestern Hangzhou housing most undergraduate and many graduate programs. The Yuquan campus is the historic engineering campus. The Xixi campus houses humanities and social sciences. The Huajiachi campus has agricultural programs. The International Campus in Haining is a purpose-built facility for joint institute programs. Each campus has a different character and student community.
Hangzhou is consistently rated as one of China's most livable cities. The West Lake area provides scenic beauty and cultural heritage. The city has excellent restaurants, shopping, and entertainment, though with fewer international options than Shanghai or Beijing. The cost of living is significantly lower than in first-tier cities — a comfortable student budget is 2,000-3,000 RMB per month for food and personal expenses.
The technology ecosystem is Hangzhou's unique asset. Alibaba's headquarters are in the city, and the surrounding area is dense with tech startups, venture capital, and digital commerce companies. For students interested in technology entrepreneurship or digital business, Hangzhou offers opportunities that rival Beijing's Zhongguancun, with a more pleasant living environment.
Admissions and costs
Admission to Zheda is competitive but slightly less selective than Tsinghua or Beida. The university receives a large number of international applications, and strong academic credentials are essential. For English-taught programs, IELTS 6.0-6.5 or TOEFL 80-90 is typically required, though the joint institute programs have higher requirements. CSC scholarship applications should be submitted through both the CSC portal and the Zheda application system.
Tuition for Chinese-taught undergraduate programs is approximately 22,000 RMB per year. English-taught undergraduate programs at the International Campus cost 60,000-80,000 RMB per year. Chinese-taught master's programs cost 28,000-32,000 RMB per year. English-taught master's programs cost 40,000-60,000 RMB per year. The joint institute programs are the most expensive but also the most internationally oriented.
Hangzhou's lower cost of living means the CSC scholarship stipend goes further here than in Beijing or Shanghai. A doctoral student receiving 3,500 RMB per month can live comfortably, including occasional restaurant meals and entertainment. The lower cost also makes self-funded study more feasible at Zheda than at first-tier city universities.
